What this is all about
"We need proof that you can build HTML5 for the web and mobile, of course. Can't you show us some HTML5ish stuff you did?"
This is what I keep hearing recently from clients and potential customer. HTML5 however is not just one thing. It became a label for several technologies like Javascript (and all of its frameworks), CSS3 (with all of its features like transitions, etc..) and HTML 5 itself. And in this place I will play around and experiment with all of the above. Just to learn, share and to prove that I can provide some "HTML5ish stuff".
If you are building HTML5ish stuff
you need to know stuff like
Vanilla JavaScript
CSS3
vendor prefixes
how to deal with Frameworks
(no Flash) Animations
mobile support
and don't forget about
compability
CSS preprocessor languages like LESS, SASS, etc..
fallback
frontend design
User Interfaces
classyness
How this webpage is built
To show off all those little experiments I needed a building site - a place where I can put and present all the upcoming stuff. So here we are - this site is built upon HTML5Boilerplate - the really nice work of Paul Irish, Nicolas Gallagher and some more. With this we have the responsive part (and most of the crossbrowser issues) already included - sweet!
Stuff I am trying to build
- parallax effects
- 3D effects with CSS
- Greensock Javascript Animations
- transition basics with CSS
- Responsiveness
- Fullscreen Background Video
- Evaluation the techniques above on mobile devices like iPad and kindle
- much much more...
Tutorials and tipps and even more tutorials
The best thing that happened to me while working on the examples on this page (and thus on the page itself) was learning. I am coming from a Java development background and I always used to feel some sort of dirty when I used Javascript.
But, and I have to admit that, it is actually a lot of fun what you can do with it. Manipulating the hell out of the DOM is actually really usefull. And yes, you get dirty, but you also get all the fun.
I have read a lot about CSS and Javascript in the last couple of weeks and I read even more tutorials and had a look at what other people are doing with these technologies. I found some really cool sites that helped me a lot in learning new tricks, or just in showing me how stuff works.
